“There are more important things than sport”

Fans of Borussia Dortmund as well as Mainz produced vocal support for their respective teams after the announcement of the tragic news. In the 88th minute of the match, the South Stand began to sing the football anthem “You’ll never walk alone”. Every one of the 81,000 spectators stood up from their seats and those that had a scarf began to wave them, regardless of whether a Dortmund or Mainz supporter.

“I have to pay my deepest respect. It shows how deeply rooted concepts like honour and respect for others are and can be expressed just like that,” said BVB and League Association President Dr Reinhard Rauball, expressing his gratitude.
